In honor of Black history month I must highlight successful African-American Designers. Mrs. Harvey is a respectable first choice. According to Andrea Williams Natischa Harvey were 19, fresh out of high school and was already making significant progress on a well-constructed path to her dreams. She was married to her high school sweetheart, who happened to be a professional athlete, and she was studying to become an attorney at Clark Atlanta University. She decided to take a job at Bakers during her sophomore year. She calls her time at Bakers a “paid internship” that gave her the hands-on experience and confidence she needed to strike out on her own. “I definitely believe you have to crawl before you can walk,” she said. “So I decided to work at Bakers, and my manager helped me learn pretty much everything about how to manage a store, from counting inventory to managing employees.  College definitely prepares you but life’s reality is how one learns. I can relate to her in this reference, being one who worked for baker footwear group. I not only learned about management but about my strengths and weaknesses; not to mention how much I love shoes. I must say I can appreciate her hard work and dedication. So dedicated in fact she felt guilty for depleting her family’s savings to invest in her company. Natischa spent many nights working late and sleeping in her store, away from her husband and three children. She even took a two-week trip to China alone to find a manufacturer for her shoes. With her mother’s support and cash from a stock investment that was initially intended to pay for her college tuition, she opened her first boutique in 2004. Natischa has also seen her shoes grace the feet of some major celebrities, including Vivica A. Fox, Raven Symone and Christina Aguilera.  http://

She actually credits her celeb clientele for giving her company its first real push into the mainstream. She stated “Once celebrities put a stamp of approval on Fever Shoes and certified the brand – it took off,” Natischa said. “I went from selling $600 – $700 per day to almost $15,000 in one day.” She also attributes her ever-expanding customer base to constant media exposure and diverse press such as People Style Watch and Essence. “I definitely appreciate the support that the African American community gives me, but I want support from everyone,” she said. “I make shoes for all women.” Natischa was an invited guest at the White House, Women’s Entrepreneurship Conference. She was recognized as one of the country’s youngest and most successful women entrepreneurs, and she acknowledges her impact on others who aspire to start their own businesses. While she is very careful to avoid glamorizing the process, even despite her current success, she encourages people to pursue their passions wholeheartedly. “If something is meant for you to do, and you are willing to work hard for it, it is going to happen,” she said. “It may take a while – it took me 6 years – but it will happen. If you want to succeed as much as you want to breathe, you will be successful.” According to high heel junkie, Natischa’s FEVER shoes have been featured in the widely read national publications but in celebration of “Essence” readers, FEVER put on a readers-only sale that allowed the golden glamorous heels to be purchased for a fraction of the price. A variety of celebrities have also rocked the FEVER brand on personal appearances and at red carpet events. Check out their most popular style, exclusively at www.fevershoes.com, for FEVER is a $1.5 million-and-growing brand that Mrs. Harvey has firmly established. Now, who has the fever for these Fabulous FEVER shoe? I can say I sure do.

Giuseppe Zanotti, shoe connoisseur

Giuseppe-Zanotti-Fall-Winter-2012-2013-Shoes-Collection_06In the early 1980’s Zanotti was a blazing DJ and frequented fashionable nightspots. He shortly realized his natural talent for art, design, and fashion. In the early 90’s he felt the need to create styles without any restrictions. That is when he bought the Vicini shoe factory and devoted himself solely to fashion. He moved his style office into this small factory, added a department for creating jewels, heels, and then he hired expert embroiderers. He focused everything on a formula of originality and artistry of the highest level. Giuseppe started with only a handful of employees; he soon had more than 300 expert specialists producing elegant footwear. The first boutique opened in Milan in 2000, additional boutiques followed in the major fashion capitals of New York, Paris, London, Moscow and Dubai, and now there is Giuseppe footwear all around the world.

He is known by many and loved by most, so it was not a surprise that more than 300 people came out to meet him when Saks Fifth Avenue Dadeland hosted the Fifth Avenue Club’s top client’s luncheon. According to socialmiami.com Saks had the American Nicaraguan Foundation and Baptist Health Foundation for cocktails and shoe autographing. Giuseppe sketched illustrations of his shoes, took pictures with the customers and gave everyone that bought a pair of his shoes a beautiful black croc tote. Everyone enjoyed spending time with the fascinating Italian shoe designer. Not only does he make appearances, he is an advocate for charities and it became a special moment in time when Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele united with Giuseppe for a one-of-a-kind creation.giuseppe-zanotti-chopardA gem-set stiletto was auctioned on behalf of the fight against AIDS. Caroline stated that Giuseppe’s talent has inspired a project combining our respective crafts. This pair of shoes represents the expression of two artists at the peak of their profession, and a beautiful means for their future owner to support a noble cause”. For over 15 years, Giuseppe Zanotti has been one of the most sought-after celebrity shoe designers. Famed for his jeweled pumps, his company is distinguished by its exceptional expertise that has been gradually yet continuously enriched over the years. He has been supporting Am FAR’s activities for several years. This project also sparked new creative inspiration and gave me the means to fulfill a dream: that of creating the most precious shoes ever…”

Zanotti is not scared to step ouside the box and take opportunity when faced with it. That might be why Footwear News got the inside scoop when there was speculation about partnering with Kanye West. He did tell them that Kanye had been making monthly visits to the shoe factor and spending 10-12 hours per visit, learning about shoes. Kanye is captivated by both the design and construction which led to them designing something. Currently, a few designs are available for purchase. 0-Kim-Kardashians-LAX-GiuThe latest talk is the  White Chain Spring 2013 Sandals that Kim Kardashian was spotted in at LAX. Which are available at Bloomingdale’s for $995. The white sandals feature an open almond toe and a 3.5″ stiletto heel. Giuseppe Zanotti is famous for his extraordinary shoe engineering. His passion is amazing and that is why I had to incorporate this short video of his pure love for craftsmanship. Upon viewing Giuseppe’s “Soul of a Shoe” I did not think I could fall more in love with shoes and I hope anyone who appreciates art, do so as well. Below is the short version.

The shoe collection, behind Coco Chanel

www.estlyeme.netThe world knows Chanel because of her high fashion, clean lines, high quality leather handbags and vintage clothing. The Chanel brand started with a single vision, inspired by menswear, she started dominating the buyer’s market and her designs were known around France. Known as Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel started putting her designing ideas on paper years before she opened her first store in 1909 in Paris, France. The store was on the ground floor of a friend’s apartment complex, who often hosted gatherings for France’s elite and gentlemen with their fashion-curious mistresses. According to an article I read by Malene Soegard she stated that Chanel felt, women should not forget about fashion during the tough years of factory work and supporting soldiers at war, her business grew during the First World War. It was also during this time the “Chanel Number 5” was launched, this fragrance became one of the top selling perfumes still to this day. Coco continued to expand her couture empire throughout the 1930s. I want to acknowledge the Chanel shoe line, which came about when she hired Raymond Massaro in 1894.CHANEL-Massaro72516

Two colors jointed together to create an elegant look.Coco Chanel has always thought that a pair of two-tone shoes is the requisite style for women. Mr. Massaro believed the design of black square toe make feet seem slim. His father was the one who made the first pair of two-tone shoes for Coco Chanel. He is currently preserving the lost art of shoemaking in a museum. Along with the rest of every pair of footwear ever made for CHANEL – including Coco’s original two-tone sandal, which set the standard for decades to follow. To this day, Massaro is the only name that’s allowed to be stitched into the shoe next to Chanel’s. Today, Chanel continues to grow, a unisex line lauched in the year 2000. The house continues to develop fragrances and has become known for its black leather handbags, and well-stitched garments. After 80 years, the Chanel name continued to attract customers from around the world. Hoehn Zimmerman in Marketing News states, “We don’t confuse the consumer. With Chanel, people know what to expect. And they keep coming back to us, at all ages. Chanel is located in Canada, the United States and various countries in Europe, including Italy, Spain, Denmark and Germany.
